How to Get Recruited For Influencer Collaborations: An Insider’s Top 5 Tips

Marketing experts have made up their minds… pushy advertisements and contrived photoshoots with too-perfect models are a thing of the past. With predicted growth to $6.5 billion by the end of 2019, there are BIG bucks in the next major industry: influencer marketing.

Diving headfirst into the world of endorsement offers and brand deals just makes sense. Gone are the days of groveling for a modeling contract, giving up pizza, and squeezing into sky-high heels to live the life of a superstar. Authenticity sells, and brands are realizing the value of partnering with genuine people who have trusting followers.

As cash floods into the influencer marketing business, so do hordes of Instagrammers, YouTubers, and bloggers who want to make a living creating content and cultivating a following. So how does anyone actually rise to the top and become successful in the industry?

Success comes from being scouted not only by brands, but also by the influencer marketing agencies who represent them.

Here are the 5 most important tips to grab the attention of companies like ours!

5. PUT YOURSELF IN OUR SHOES…

Beginning influencers tend to underestimate the amount of information that marketing technology can reveal. If you’ve bought followers, or if your current followers aren’t engaging with your content, agencies can see this and are MUCH less likely to use you for campaigns–why would brands pay someone to promote their product to a bunch of fake accounts?
Instead, focus your energy on engagement and interaction with your followers, and build a community surrounding your online presence. Respond to comments, and follow back some of your soon-to-be dedicated fans.
It also helps to put keywords relevant to your account in your bio, and consider switching to a business account–these are things we can search by and they will allow you to be found more easily by brands.

4. CREATE A UNIQUE BRAND

Unless you think your potential followers have a reason to trust your opinion on all topics imaginable (read: unless you’re a Kardashian), it’s time to get specific. Pick a topic that you’re passionate about, and stick to it. Whether you like art, fashion, or political activism, relevant brands will be more likely to work with you if they can easily place you as already having their target audience.
Additionally, step up your personal branding–find a catchy, easy-to-remember instagram handle, and make everything you post visually pleasing through unique fonts and appealing colors. Try planning your posts to follow a set schedule, and make sure to analyze which posts do the best. That way, you can understand what’s resonating with your audience and what isn’t, and from there you can adjust accordingly to stimulate even more growth.

3. NETWORK, NETWORK, AND THEN NETWORK SOME MORE

Connect online and in real life with similar accounts to yours. Collaborate with, shoutout, repost stories from, and support other influencers you really vibe with. This will increase your reach and growth exponentially, and it’ll do the same for your new friends–a win-win!
There are also tons of influencer and digital marketing conferences worldwide where you can meet brands face-to-face and link up with potential sponsors on the hunt for new brand ambassadors. Try to go to some near you.

2. PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE!

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t expect your social media presence to be. Get comfortable with the fact that it could take a couple of years to flourish into the social media butterfly you aim to be, and that’s TOTALLY NORMAL. It doesn’t mean your followers hate you, and it doesn’t mean it’s never going to happen. Just be patient.
Along the same lines, don’t ask for too much money per post while you’re just getting started. There are a million other aspiring influencers who are willing to give massive discounts for their first sponsored posts, so don’t let yourself be undercut by the competition! Long-term brand ambassadors are on the rise and will be more profitable in the long run, so build trust with brands now, and watch your investment grow in the years to come.

1.  DON’T. BE. FAKE.

Finally, and most importantly, be confident in your creativity and don’t hold back! Influencer marketing is taking over in the first place because today’s consumers are tired of strained, non-authentic branding messages. They’ll be able to tell if you aren’t being genuine or if you’re holding back from sharing the less-than-glamorous parts of your life, and no brand wants to work with someone who appears untrustworthy.
So kick your feet up, share both the ups AND the downs of your life, and try posting a #nomakeup selfie once in awhile. Trust us, your followers will love it.
